Mariachi is the traditional Mexican music par excellence and for the first time, a World Mariachi Congress was held in Mexico City.
For the first time, the Mexican capital gathered mariachi enthusiasts and performers for a five-day event featuring daily concerts and open-air performances to celebrate the music deeply rooted in Mexican culture.
The closing event at Zocalo Square saw hundreds of musicians aiming to break a 2013 world record held by Guadalajara, when 700 mariachis had performed a concert, according to local media. On Sunday, more than 1,000 musicians and singers performed the popular song “Cielito Lindo”, the reports said.
Mariachis originated in the 19th century in the western state of Jalisco, where they performed at festivals and weddings. Today, they perform at weddings, hotels, or birthday parties, and on any occasion that is worth celebrating.
