To control the outbreak of potholes in the streets of Mérida, municipal president Cecilia Patrón Laviada announced a reinforcement of the brigades dedicated to filling holes in the pavement, both large and small.
He “implored” the Mayan god of rain Chaac to stop the downpours so that the streets would dry out, the holes would stop sprouting and the hot and cold asphalt material would grab hold.
The mayor insisted that this uncontrollable problem of the appearance of holes in the street pavement is due to the copious rains that have fallen in the city. And he gave a piece of information: as of October 19 of this year, rainfall is the most abundant in the last 20 years. Additionally, 60 percent of the streets are more than 50 years old.
“There are many needs and we are redoubling our efforts to control and eliminate them,” she said at the start of new brigades that are joining the initial patching work.
She said that his administration allocates 22.5 million pesos to patching work for its control and with a new injection of 15 million they will expand the crews.
The director of Public Works of the City Council, Sergio Chan Lugo, reported that approximately 80,000 potholes have already been filled in the city, and with this reinforcement of personnel and resources, repairs will increase from 1,000 square meters to 3,000. However, the official admitted that there are countless potholes, but he is already in the control phase of the urban problem.
In this reinforcement of the work against potholes, four private companies that won the public tenders and 36 workers from the different municipal directorates joined in who patch the small holes with cold asphalt to prevent their growth.
With this strategy and if it stops raining for a few weeks, the pothole outbreak will be under control and the goal of zero potholes will be achieved. Mayor Patrón Laviada reported that they are already working on next year’s budget where the repaving of streets will be a priority, as will the renewal of public lighting lamps.
