Due to theft, lack of use, and deterioration of the bicycles, the continuity of the En Bici program is being analyzed. Of the 1,200 bicycles that were in the last administration, only 500 are currently working, revealed Carmen González Martín, director of Municipal government.

“Many bicycle locks were no longer useful, others were lost due to theft or misplacement. Today we have 500 bicycles in the various Bike Stations and we are studying the continuity of this program,” mentioned the municipal official.

She explained that the vehicle fleet of this mobility scheme was drastically reduced due to the deterioration of the bicycles, although there have also been cases of theft. It was also detected that in some units, the locks were no longer operating correctly, which made the bicycles unusable.

In addition to the above, the interviewee explained that other units were taken out of circulation due to lack of use by people, especially in the south of the city, an area in which the municipality was forced to eliminate Bici Stations, contrary to other places, like those at universities, where students use bicycles.

Regarding the electric scooter program, González Martín pointed out that its continuity is also being evaluated, mainly due to the regulatory framework of its operation, as well as safety factors, among other reasons that have caused the project to be paused on hold. It’s an official opinion. She recalled that the electric scooters were operating for approximately a month in the Paseo de Montejo area, with a total of 30 test units, a project in which a payment for the use of each unit was evaluated, but which has also been paused in waiting for a response on its continuity.
