The Christmas holidays are already around the corner, and something that cannot be missed is piñatas. They come in all sizes and shapes, very consistent with the festivities.
Sellers point out that they are already beginning to sell, especially to companies, restaurants, and hotels that use them for decoration; however, they expect strong sales to begin from December 15 onwards.
“Now they have started to sell, but in mid-December is when we sell the most because people are already starting to prepare for the family pre-Christmas parties (known in México as “posadas”), Christmas Eve, and then for New Year’s Eve”, commented Andrés, a piñata seller from the center.
As for prices, he said that small star piñatas range from 50 pesos to 150 pesos for large ones, while those with a Santa Claus figure can reach 200 pesos.
“It all depends on the material it is made with and the size. Here we have let’s say the normal one, but they order bigger ones, if it is made of metallic paper it costs more because it is more expensive than Chinese paper.” Finally, he said that the main figures sold are a star, Santa Claus, and turkeys. However, once December 25 has passed, the most wanted are piñatas in the shape of old men, which represent the year that is ending.
