Amid tensions between Mexico and the United States after the election of Donald Trump as president, Mérida is preparing for the inauguration of the new US Consulate General building. This event promises to bring together prominent diplomatic and political figures, among whom are expected American Ambassador Ken Salazar to be present, according to information collected from the event organizers.
The event, scheduled for next Wednesday, December 4, will be attended by the American ambassador Ken Salazar, who will lead the ceremony along with Consul Justen Thomas. The state governor, Joaquín Díaz Mena, and the mayor of Mérida, Cecilia Patrón Laviada, as well as civil and military authorities, will also attend.
The new consulate, located in the Vía Montejo area north of Mérida, has an investment of 3 billion pesos and is considered an architectural milestone.
The project began in December 2020 under the design of the American firm Miller Hull Partnership, in collaboration with B.L. Harbert International, and as reported, the construction seeks to reflect the local beauty, integrating elements such as an interior water mirror that symbolizes the cenotes of the region.
This visit will mark the return of Ambassador Salazar to Mérida, who was last in this city of Mérida in November 2021 during the second meeting of Governors of the South-Southeast, held at the International Congress Center.
It is worth remembering that, in August of this year, they canceled a visit by the diplomat after testing positive for Covid-19, and in that context, Salazar gave his opinion on the Judicial Reform in Mexico, expressing that the direct election of judges represented a risk for democracy.
A few days before the inauguration, staff from the Embassy and Consulate are finalizing preparations, such as sending invitations and confirmations of attendance.
According to official sources, the new consulate will be a safe and sustainable platform for diplomacy, in addition to strengthening the bilateral relationship in the Mexican southeast. The opening of this modern headquarters not only represents an advance in diplomatic infrastructure but also reinforces the ties between both nations at a time of shared challenges and opportunities.
