200 km from Mérida is the “south pole” of Yucatán: a small southern town that has the historical records of the lowest temperatures, down to zero degrees Celsius, an icy cold that the population already faced on three days of the 21st century.

The “southern pole” of Yucatán is Nohalal, a community in the municipality of Tekax which, according to the 2020 Census, has only 24 inhabitants (13 women and 11 men) and seven occupied homes.

In Nohalal, located in the Yucatecan mountains, five minors and 19 adults reside, in the Inegi states. Of the latter, 13 people are between 18 and 59 years old; one is 60-64 years old and five are 65 years old or older.

According to Google Maps, Nohalal is located 200 km south of Mérida, if you take the short route to Peto, and just 20 km southwest of Becanchén, the Tekax police station that this November 2024 recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the state.

According to the historical records of the National Water Commission (Conagua), in Nohalal people have endured extreme minimum temperatures of zero, one, two, and three degrees in nine months of the year, while in the three months, they faced eight or nine degrees.

In Nohalal, the summer months, July and August, are the least cold, while January and December are the freezing months. On January 23 and 24, 2009, Nohalal recorded a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius. Before those dates, in December 2006, 0 degrees were also observed. The other records of freezing temperatures in Nohalal vary between 1 and 9 degrees Celsius from 2001 to date.
