Young musicians performed at the Tapanco Cultural Center in Merida, Yucatan.

As part of the tour of the U Múuk’il Kaaj Ethnomusical and Autonomous Movement, on Saturday, November 9, Juumil Wayak’, Capi SM, Big Sergio, Jupi DC, Diego Cahun and Cristian Augusto performed, a group of young people who promote the revitalization of the Mayan language through music.

U Múuk’il Kaaj is an initiative of musicians, singers, and rappers from the community of Tihosuco, Quintana Roo, and other communities in the Mayan area of that state, who are dedicated to touring the entire country to promote the Mayan language.

In addition to presenting music, the group also shares part of the customs, traditions, knowledge, and ancestral legacy of the Maya.

The young people celebrate having the opportunity to present music in the Mayan language in various spaces where it has generally been displaced and thus spread how proud they are of their culture and of keeping one of the indigenous languages of the country alive.

In addition, within the ethnomusical tour, other activities are also carried out that involve actions for the revitalization of the language, such as workshops, short film presentations, and meetings with students from other countries, among others.

Some of the activities are carried out in coordination with the State Center for Training, Research, and Humanistic Diffusion of Yucatan (CECIDHY).

The U Múuk’il Kaaj Ethnomusical and Autonomous Movement reported that they are preparing more presentations and will be informing about the dates through the Facebook page Movimiento Etnomusical y Autónomo U Múuk’il Kaaj.
