Guayaberas made in China and other Asian countries are invading the international market, and Yucatan is no exception.
The president of the National Chamber of the Clothing Industry (Canaive), Luis Gerardo González Morales, warned about the distribution of “pirate” guayaberas in the state, stating that in addition to the million-dollar losses for local manufacturing, these guayaberas are 100% disposable, deceiving buyers.
He said that one of the biggest problems in the industry begins at customs, since illegal products enter through that route, mostly from Asia, in addition to the wholesale clothing packages that arrive in the state, featuring all kinds of garments, including “pirate” guayaberas with prices under 200 pesos.
He mentioned that many are passing off these cheaper versions of the dress as original or made by Yucatecan hands, however, he stressed that they can be recognized by specific characteristics.
He urged buyers to purchase the garments in formal stores to help the Yucatecan families who are dedicated to the activity. In addition, he invited those who do it informally to establish themselves so that they have the benefits that the chamber of commerce offers.
