With the victory of Donald Trump in the United States of America, relatives of Yucatecans who live in the neighboring country are in uncertainty, as they do not know what the work situation will be and fear what will happen socially if they are deported.
“Unfortunately, an attack against Latinos, Mexicans, and, therefore, against Yucatecans is expected,” said Miguel Ángel Martínez Contreras, president of the civil association Poder Migrante.
The representative of relatives of people who are migrants in the United States said that they feel uncertain about the arrival of Donald John Trump to the White House.
At the same time, the activist admits that the money from remittances may be reduced.
“In 2023, migrants managed to bring 7 billion pesos into the state, which brought a certain economic stability, but now we will have to see how everything turns out,” he said.
One of the main fears that Martínez Contreras faces is that if Donald Trump includes the deportation of Mexican migrants in his government plans, what will happen at a social level in the country?
“I wonder if the federal and state governments will be prepared to receive the Yucatecans who would arrive,” he said.
According to the Institute for the Development of Culture of the State of Yucatán (Indemaya), of the 160,000 Yucatecans who live in the United States, only one in four has legal residency and at least 100,000 reside in California.
Another area where a significant number of people from Yucatán also live is San Francisco since it has been identified that about 46,000 people are living in this territory.
Indemaya records that this population of Yucatecans living in the United States represents 18 percent of the state population and they are the ones who send remittances to about seven thousand families, therefore, it is an important economic population for the state.
In 2022 alone, the money that this population sent to Yucatán was 392 million 196 thousand 130 dollars and for 2021, this amount was 335 million 59 thousand 800 million dollars.
The money that was sent in 2022, if converted to Mexican pesos, is 78 thousand 439 million 220 thousand pesos.
The majority of families that receive money from the United States live in Mérida, Oxkutzcab, Tekax, Ticul, Peto, Buctzotz, Cenotillo, Motul, Hunucmá, Muna, and Progreso.
