A fire destroyed a trailer that was traveling on the Mérida-Cancún highway, at kilometer 54, near the municipality of Tahmek.

The vehicle – which crashed during the early hours of Saturday, December 28 – was transporting fruits and vegetables, which is why the looting took place. The driver had managed to leave the unit before the fire consumed the cabin and part of the trailer.

The flames forced the agents of the Ministry of Public Security to temporarily close the road to allow the work of firefighters, who worked for several hours to put out the incident.

At dawn, only twisted iron remained from the burning vehicle. The cargo scattered at the accident site was collected by residents of nearby communities.

Dozens of people showed up to take the fruits and vegetables while authorities removed the remains of the trailer. The causes of the fire have not been determined. Likewise, the road remained closed during the maneuvers, which affected traffic in the area for several hours.
