The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada assured Juan Ramón de la Fuente that the relationship with Mexico has been beneficial for both countries

The Secretary of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Juan Ramón de la Fuente, addressed the recent comments made by officials from the northern country against Mexico on Friday, December 13, with his counterpart from Canada, Mélanie Joly.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs assured De la Fuente that the relationship between our two countries must “continue to be friendly and collaborative since it has been beneficial for both countries.”

“Both agreed to maintain an open and fluid dialogue between the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Mexican Foreign Ministry,” said the SRE.

In the phone call, they also agreed to maintain good bilateral and trilateral relations as partners in the trade agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada (T-MEC).

“In addition, they exchanged points of view on the border work that both countries carry out,” she added.

The USMCA will be reviewed every six years after it comes into effect and is now expected to be renewed for 16 years, until 2042.

US President-elect Donald Trump has threatened Mexico and Canada with 25 percent tariffs if they do not take action to stop migration and imports from China.
