A group of inhabitants of Chicxulub Puerto and members of the Canadian community living in Yucatán, who promote sterilization campaigns and rescue homeless animals, gathered at Parque Independencia in front of the Municipal Palace of Progreso to demonstrate against animal abuse.
The reason for the demonstration is due to the massive poisoning of dogs, which occurred last Tuesday, December 17 in the Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood in Chicxulub, where at least eight pets died. The complainants generally called on the authorities to eradicate this social problem and demand justice for the dogs that died.
Symbolically, on Sunday night, the protest attendees placed candles in the park to raise awareness and make more people pay attention to the well-being of animals, whether domestic or stray. As reported, the affected families of the dogs assured that they would go to the State Attorney General’s Office to file the corresponding complaints.
On December 17, municipal police arrived at 25th and 44th streets in that neighborhood, where owners of the poisoned animals and the corpses of two dogs gathered. They carried out the first investigations, took photographs, and spoke with those affected.
Likewise, personnel from the State Investigation Police (PEI) of the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) attended and the next day a forensic veterinarian arrived to contribute to the investigations.
The murdered dogs were sterilized and enjoyed excellent health thanks to the care of neighbors and foreigners.
