Although it might be thought that the most frequent report from the Municipal Public Services department in the Urban Cleaning area concerns street cleaning or garbage collection, the removal of dead animals is the most common, accounting for up to 80 percent of the reports.
The above was announced by councilor Genny Palomo Méndez, president of the Permanent Commission of Public Services, during the last Ordinary Session of the Council and before the approval by majority vote of a tender for a company to carry out the service of incineration of the bodies of the animals that Aseo Urbano collects daily.
In that sense, he highlighted that the collection of dead animals is the main citizen report that reaches the Municipal Public Services department. There are months when 60 percent of the reports are due to this situation, but there are months when this topic accounts for 80 percent of the total reports made by the people of Merida.
The municipal official explained that from January to November of this year, Urban Cleaning personnel lifted 15,656 dead animals in the western sector, while in the eastern sector, 10,551 were lifted. That is, during the first 11 months of 2024, the municipality collected more than 26 thousand dead animals throughout the municipality. He added that in the western sector, there are more dead animals because the Centenario and Animaya zoos are included, in addition to the fact that the municipality collects the lifeless animals that the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) has at its disposal, in order to take them to incinerate and that they do not generate health problems for the population.
