Erosion devours Yucatecan beaches; damage is evident

The eastern coast of the port from the end of the pier to the Chicxulub pier, in a stretch of about five kilometers, ended up disfigured this year 2024 due to the unstoppable erosion and damage caused by Hurricane “Milton” that skimmed the Yucatecan coastline. The cold fronts and the phenomenon of northwest winds were also a cause of the damage.

Over the course of 12 months, the eastern coast of this port was not only disfigured but also ended the year with less beach, the sea entered about 20 meters, destroying foundations and breakwaters of the summer properties.

The most severe damage occurred in the last three months of the year, since October when Hurricane “Milton” skimmed the Yucatecan coast, preceded by the fearsome and destructive “chikin ic” (“bad” wind from the northwest in the Mayan language), whose surges were lethal and caused more erosion. It also damaged the wooden walkway that joins the two promenades and increased the advance of the sea.

The coastal strip from 58th Street to the Chicxulub Puerto pier is invaded by spurs, geotubes, and bags of sand, which prevent free passage, and which the owners of the summer houses placed in a desperate effort to protect their properties and avoid the Collapse of walls and sinkholes in swimming pools and terraces.

But the erosion is unstoppable, the sea continues to eat the beach, and in addition to the summer houses affected, the riverside residents also pay the consequences, in the octopus catching season they went through serious trouble to have and keep their boats safe when bad times hit.

In the absence of a beach, the boats are placed in the streets, a panorama that can be seen in this port and coast of Chicxulub. Given the lack of a beach, many people, both local and foreign, stopped going out to walk and run, as it is risky due to the spurs, sandbags, and stones from destroyed foundations, so they exercise on the Progreso-Chicxulub highway.
