The use of fireworks in Progreso during the Christmas celebrations caused the death of birds and the disappearance of dogs.
As a side effect of the use of fireworks in the December celebrations, the death of a considerable number of birds in the port was recorded, as well as the disappearance of several dogs who, frightened by the loud noise, escaped from their homes during the night of the 24th and the dawn of the 25th.
It must be remembered that items such as firecrackers and rockets, among other similar explosives that are commonly used during these dates, generate powerful noises, to which many animals become sensitive.
The death of the birds was recorded on the night of last Tuesday during Christmas Eve, when the detonation of the fireworks was loud, causing the intense noise to disorient the birds, and several of them were recorded on the pavement along some streets. This caused them to be run over or simply die when they fell.
On the other hand, several pet owners reported the disappearance of dogs from their homes, since these, also due to the noise of the firecrackers, in their desperation due to the fright caused, ended up running away from their homes, getting lost in the streets of Progreso, a fact that many families searched their dogs throughout the area.
Faced with this situation, inhabitants of the port, such as Lucía Cruz, argued that this type of detonation should be prohibited, since the effects they cause are not limited to animals, but also concern children within the autistic spectrum, who end up damaged by the loud noises throughout the day and generated intense reactions and attacks on themselves.
For his part, the mayor pointed out, concerning the firecrackers and the New Year’s dolls (aka Años Viejos), that these will be allowed in the city, as long as pyrotechnics regulated by the corresponding authorities are used, giving rise to this activity being able to continue taking place in the port.
It is estimated that at least five dogs ended up fleeing their homes due to stress and fear of the explosions. Their owners are already looking for them, since several of them escaped after managing to get through the metal bars of the gates, and it is feared that they could be injured as a result.
