The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Yucatan reports that, for the first time in its history, the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 12 “Benito Juárez García” performed the multi-organ procurement of both kidneys and corneas, thanks to the generosity of the relatives of a 40-year-old male patient who unfortunately lost his life due to a head injury.
Amid applause and a human fence made up of the donor’s staff and relatives, they paid tribute in the hallway leading to the operating room to the male patient, for such a noble act of providing hope of life to other patients who require a transplant.
This procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary institutional team, under strict medical protocols, and headed by the head of the Clinical Department of the Transplant Unit of the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) in Merida, Dr. Jorge Martínez Ulloa.
In the case of the kidneys, they were transferred to the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) in Mérida, to be transplanted to two female patients, one of them 28 years old, under hemodialysis treatment for five years and the second, 44 years old, who had been receiving peritoneal dialysis for three years. Both patients are in recovery and under strict medical supervision.
The corneas were transported by air to the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE) of the General Hospital “Dr. Gaudencio González Garza” of the National Medical Center (CMN) “La Raza”, under strict safety and health measures.
The director of the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 12, Dr. Claudia González Ramírez, assured that this procurement marks a precedent for the hospital since it is the first time that such an important process has been developed since the Sanitary License for the procurement of organs and tissues for transplant purposes was recently obtained through the Federal Commission for the Protection of Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS).
Dr. Argenis Sthiven Valentin Aguilar Núñez, Hospital Donation Coordinator of HGR No. 12, assured that this procurement was carried out under an exhaustive protocol in compliance with current legislation and the institutional regulations established by the Coordination of Donation and Transplantation of Organs, Tissues, and Cells, ensuring at all times compliance with the corresponding processes and prioritizing the safety and traceability of the process.
For his part, the head of the IMSS in Yucatan, Dr. Alonso Juan Sansores Río, acknowledged the entire body of doctors, specialists, nurses, and all the personnel involved, so that the HGR No. 12 could carry out this first procurement, which is undoubtedly an opportunity for other patients to transform their lives and that of their family, in addition to being a historic event for all of us who make up this Institution.
To be a voluntary donor of organs and tissues, anyone who wishes to do so can consult the National Transplant Center website: https://www.gob.mx/cenatra or visit the IMSS website at the link: http://www.imss.gob.mx/salud-en-linea/donacion-organos where you can register to be accredited as a voluntary donor.
It is important that those who wish to be part of this group of voluntary donors express their wishes to their immediate family members so that when the moment or circumstance of being a potential donor arises, the family is fully informed of this wish and will respect it.
