The art of collecting and studying postage stamps will be promoted during a week-long event organized by the Mérida Philatelic Club, the event will take place from December 14 to 21, reported Ricardo Alonso Rodríguez Morales, its president, who shared that they seek to spread a hobby that is an artistic expression as a historical reflection.
Philately consists of collecting stamps and everything related to mail: envelopes, letters, and postcards. Although traditional mail is in disuse, stamp collecting is still in force.
Philately Week began on Saturday, December 14 with the cancellation of a commemorative stamp from the International Philatelic Congress. “Canceling” means putting a stamp into circulation, marking its availability to the public. This act will be the first of three “cancellations” scheduled during the week, all in collaboration with Correos de México.
The program includes an exhibition of old and new postcards and stamps, from the club members`private collections. Among the outstanding pieces is a stamp collection known as Hidalgos, with stamps from 1861 dating back to the time of Benito Juárez. This collection was awarded in a national contest in Guadalajara and now aspires to compete internationally, an achievement for the philatelic field of Yucatán.
There will also be conferences and activities for the whole family. On Thursday, December 19th, there will be a talk on the history of stamps, and on Friday the 20th, a forum of experts will analyze the latest developments and the current situation of stamp collecting.
The event will culminate on Saturday, December 21 with an activity dedicated to children, since collecting is gaining popularity among the young population in Yucatán.
