Mayor Cecilia Patron presented the Animal Protection Unit (UPA), an organization that will address complaints of animal abuse received by the city council, promote a culture of care and respect for animals, and monitor compliance with the municipality’s Wildlife Regulations.

To achieve the goals set, the municipal president indicated that the UPA will be made up of a multidisciplinary group of professionals, such as veterinarians, lawyers, qualified judges, and operational personnel, who will have the mission of providing better results in animal protection and care.

She commented that the Unit, in addition to responding to complaints of animal abuse, will receive reports of animals in street conditions, implement humanitarian programs for the management of animal populations, carry out awareness-raising actions for responsible ownership, and sign agreements and alliances to improve transportation routes. Action.

However, so that the UPA can function correctly, it called on the people of Merida to report cases of animal abuse to 070 or Ayuntatel, so that operational personnel of the Unit can go to the indicated address and be able to speak with the owners and families and make them see that there are other ways to care for their animals.

“We will go talk to the families because what we want is for there to be no animal abuse. The team will explain to them what the care of a sentient being should be like and when we see that the violence is extreme, the animal will be taken away and we will begin an administrative process because it would be violating the municipality’s Wildlife Regulations,” she said.

Patron Laviada stressed that in one month of starting operations, the UPA has attended to 80 reports, of which 10 percent of the cases were classified as serious, where the animals were removed for medical diagnosis, and rehabilitation and then placed in adoption to Meridans who showed interest in these sentient beings. “Today we can see that we already have six cases that are being processed with administrative sanctions as mandated, we simply adhere to the regulations, ensuring that the regulations are complied with, that the laws are complied with,” commented the mayor during the presentation of the UPA in the Municipal Animal Care Center (CEMAA).
