On Monday, December 2, the Attorney General of Quintana Roo, Raciel López Salazar, issued a strong message and announced a firm stance against taxi drivers involved in illegal activities.
At the end of the press conference of the Security Roundtable, held in Chetumal, López Salazar stressed that there will be no tolerance for those who break the law, regardless of their union or organizational affiliation.
López Salazar warned that licenses, concessions, and even vehicles will be revoked or confiscated, in addition to other legal actions if drivers are caught in criminal acts.
The announcement comes after a series of attacks committed by taxi drivers in Cancun and recently in Playa del Carmen, events that have raised alarm among residents and tourists who visit the tourist areas of the state.
According to López Salazar, operations have been initiated to capture those responsible and restore security in the transportation sector.
López Salazar’s statement, as well as his strong stance against the taxi drivers’ union, comes as a response to a growing wave of violent and criminal incidents involving members of this union, which have been linked not only to aggressions but also to homicides.
The Attorney General’s message resonates as an ultimatum: “No more excuses, no more abuses. Bad taxi drivers have their days numbered.”
