December is traditionally a month when street vendors increase in the Historic Center of Merida and the perimeter of shopping malls.
Reports indicate that some 25 thousand people are located on sidewalks in the Centro perimeter area, but also on corners, traffic lights, and avenues.
According to reports, the number of street vendors during the December season increases by up to 15 percent with the sale of lights, decorations, Christmas-related products, clothing, as well as food and drinks.
The main streets of the Centro, are literally invaded by all types of vendors without municipal permits that sell all kinds of different items.
On this subject, the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) for the third quarter of 2024 warns of an increase in informality in Yucatan with a record of 726,494 people.
The report indicates that, in 2023, the reports reached a total of 715,547 people. This growth reflects that, although more Yucatecans find employment, many do so in situations of labor vulnerability, without access to benefits or social security.
The study indicates that tertiary activities, such as commerce and services, dominate the state’s economy and concentrate 65.4% of the economically active population (EAP). These activities include key sectors such as restaurants and accommodation services, which represent 11.4 percent of jobs, and commerce with 18.3 covers formal jobs.
Regarding general employment, men have a higher rate, with 98.3 reporting employment, while among women this percentage is 97.4 percent. Although both groups show solid rates, the gap shows a slight inequality in labor insertion by gender.
On the other hand, Inegi highlighted that underemployment, that is, people who already have a job but are looking to work more hours, also grew by 8%, going from 95,678 people in 2023 to 103,252 in 2024.
Despite the challenges, Yucatán maintains an unemployment rate of 2., but an informality of 61 percent of the economically active people in the state.
However, the increase in informal employment underscores the need to generate jobs with better working conditions and greater stability for the people of Yucatan.
