A festivity that promised to be a night of joy ended in tragedy in the San Rafael neighborhood, Maxcanú, where a 15-year-old minor suffered burns to his body after an accident involving fireworks.
The incident occurred when a group of teenagers were handling fireworks.
According to witnesses, the young man lit a firecracker that, in its path, fell on the hood of the affected teenager’s sweater, causing the fabric to catch fire.
The flames quickly reached part of his body, causing serious burns. Relatives and neighbors, alarmed by the minor’s screams of pain, tried to put out the fire while requesting help from the 911 emergency number.
Minutes later, paramedics from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene and provided first aid.
After evaluating the severity of the injuries, the minor was transferred to the Agustín O’Horán General Hospital in Mérida, where he receives specialized medical care.
The use of pyrotechnics, although traditional in Christmas celebrations, continues to be one of the main causes of serious accidents this season.
Many municipalities in Yucatán face a challenge in regulating the sale and use of fireworks, especially among minors.
Despite awareness campaigns, many young people handle these products without taking the necessary precautions, which increases the risk of accidents.
According to civil protection authorities, the lack of supervision by adults and lack of knowledge about the safe handling of fireworks are key factors in these incidents.
After the incident, local authorities reiterated the importance of taking extreme precautions during the festivities and preventing minors from having pyrotechnic products.
