“At this time there is always excess cash, people let their guard down, think more about what and how to spend their money best, and neglect the detail that they may be the target of fraudsters and threats, when it should be the other way around, that is when you have to be more alert,” warns Inspector Marco Antonio Maya López, coordinator of the Tactical Analysis Unit of the Secretary of Public Security (SSP).
He pointed out that nowadays there are thefts even through WhatsApp, and with artificial intelligence even of image and voice, because they steal your name and photos: “You have to be more alert,” he reiterated.
Interviewed in the advertisement of the “Hand over the keys” campaign, to prevent problems due to alcohol consumption at Christmas; The SSP inspector reported that this corporation has specialized units to combat these crimes, but the main thing is that people report it through the 911 emergency number.
The police chief commented that until last year, an increase of 14% in reporting fraud on the internet and through telephone calls was recorded in Yucatán.
Although the State is not among the entities with the highest number of these crimes, this year, it is working to ensure that the number does not continue to increase.
The interviewee highlighted that precisely thanks to the fact that in Yucatán its population is communicative, and reports what they see as suspicious, timely interventions by the police are achieved.
He added that as part of a contribution to alert people, they will participate in a campaign called “Prevention against extortion calls”, scheduled for Thursday, December 5, where they will report on these situations and how to act when they are presented to them.
“The first thing that those who try to defraud or steal should keep in mind is that criminals are after money, and if you agree to make deposits or deliveries of the amounts they ask for and how they demand them, that is already money.” lost, it is not recovered, because the accounts disappear as soon as they collect it and even the telephone numbers, that is why the important thing is to report it and not deposit them,” he warned. He recalled that the majority of phone calls to blackmail, threaten, and commit fraud come from penitentiaries, most of them from other states in the country, so you have to be very careful when answering calls with numbers that are not even local.
