The 2024 hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico officially ends this November 30, registering activity higher than the historical average of 14 tropical systems per year, reported the State Coordination of Civil Protection (Procivy).

According to official data, 18 named tropical systems formed in the Atlantic basin, of which 7 reached the category of tropical storm and 11 evolved into hurricanes. This behavior represents a notable increase compared to the annual average and was distinguished by a record increase in activity after September, the month generally considered the peak of the season.

Procivy highlighted that these phenomena reinforce the importance of maintaining prevention strategies and constant monitoring, as well as coordination between authorities and citizens to minimize risks. With the closing of the season, the data collected is analyzed to contribute to better preparation against possible extreme events in the coming years.

The only system that entered Yucatán was Hurricane “Beryl”, which made landfall in Tulum, Quintana Roo, on July 5 and entered through the municipality of Chemax, moving towards the central coast of the state, causing strong wind conditions. and rain mainly in Valladolid, Chemax and Chichimilá.

The State Monitoring and Warning System (SEMA) kept under surveillance a low pressure that on October 5 gave rise to Tropical Depression No. 14, which later evolved into tropical storm “Milton”, an atypical system since its formation. Trajectory and evolution.

In the tropical cyclone season, storms and hurricanes were recorded that influenced the generation of rains of varying intensity for Yucatán, such as “Alberto”, “Helene”, “Nadine”, “Rafael” and “Sara”.

The hurricanes that reached Category 5 were “Beryl” and “Milton”; in Category 4, “Helene”; in Category 3, “Kirk” and “Rafael”. Hurricanes “Debby”, “Ernesto”, “Francine”, “Isaac”, “Leslie” and “Oscar” reached category 1 or 2, while tropical storms “Alberto”, “Chris”, “Gordon”, “ Joyce”, “Nadine”, “Paty” and “Sara” did not pass this category.
