The Council of Embroiderers of Yucatan has developed a total of 168 actions to protect and safeguard Mayan embroidery as a cultural heritage.

These actions were generated through 36 diagnostic workshops, three regional ones, and 85 sessions of exchange of experiences and knowledge between embroiderers, said the representative of the council Martha Elena May; who said that, as a first step, a census is being carried out to find out how many of these artisans there are in the state.

Elena May said that, although there are around 320 embroiderers who participate in the Economic and Social Development Project with a Gender Perspective through the Textile Art of Yucatan, there is no real figure of how many embroiderers there are in the entity, so as a first step of the safeguard plan, which will allow the preservation of this art, a census will be carried out to determine it.

Likewise, she commented that 168 activities are being carried out to reinforce knowledge and to be transmitted from generation to generation as a form of preservation.

The embroiderers, for their part, said they were happy to see their work reflected in actions that will preserve their knowledge and with which they will also be able to improve their economy and thus their quality of life.
