The presence of the beetle in the hives affects beekeepers in the municipality of Tahdziú, who see with despair that the insect is wreaking havoc on their apiaries.
The Aethina tumida Murray beetle, also known as the “hive beetle”, is threatening Yucatecan beekeepers.
Producer Demetrio Valle Canté assured that he had 40 hives, but now he only has two left due to the damage caused by the beetle.
He indicated that there is desperation among beekeepers due to the presence of the insect, so they ask for advice from a specialist technician who can train them to face the situation.
He explained that they need to know what type of substance to use to control these insects without putting the hives and honey at risk, which is why they need to be advised.
Faced with this situation, beekeepers ask the Ministry of Rural Development to support them with advice so they can solve the problem.
They fear greater damage to the activity if the presence of the beetle in the hives is not controlled and remember that in recent years they have gone through complicated situations that have not allowed them to recover.
“The flowering of the Tajonal plant will soon come, but what good will there be if there are flowers if there are no bees or the hives are weak, which is why this problem must be addressed immediately,” said Valle Canté.
“We hope that something can be done about it because the situation we are experiencing is desperate.” Finally, he pointed out that, in many Yucatecan municipalities, after agriculture, beekeeping is the most important economic activity.
