Activist groups demand that public information be provided about the deaths of the dolphins Alex and Plata, who allegedly died inside the facilities of Riviera Maya hotel in less than 12 months, due to mistreatment.
Activists denounce the death of two dolphins in the hotel premises, for which the authorities are already investigating the alleged mistreatment of the specimens.
The activists point out that the Barceló Maya Grand Resort hotel, in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, is the smallest dolphinarium in Mexico, which causes stress and psychological damage to the dolphins.
In addition, they claim that the habitat does not have environmental enrichment and that “the dolphins are exposed to the sun all day, causing injuries, mainly to their vision.”
They demand that public information be provided about the deaths of the dolphins Alex and Plata, who allegedly died in the hotel facilities in less than 12 months.
Investigation and protests over dolphin deaths
Following complaints from activists, the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) opened an administrative inspection procedure at the Barceló Hotel, for the death and alleged mistreatment of dolphins there.
Four days ago, on January 25, activists held a protest for the third time to demand that the tourist complex close its dolphinarium in the Riviera Maya, in a call that spread to Mexico, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
