On Sunday, December 29, the port experienced an intense tourist day with a notable arrival of visitors, who took advantage of the last Sunday of the year to have fun in Progreso.
From early on, local and national tourists began to arrive in Progreso, and slowly, they filled the traditional boardwalk and the western beach area.
Around noon, 2,000 people flooded into the sea, took family walks and tasted the traditional dishes offered by local restaurants and vendors.
However, an unusual natural phenomenon added to the atmosphere, since a dense fog covered the port for much of the day, which extended both in the residential area and over the sea, which reduced visibility to at least 200 meters (656 feet).
Although uncommon, this spectacle surprised passersby and some of them admired it and did not hesitate to capture the moment with their cameras and mobile phones, which could not capture the horizon due to the fog.
The riverside fishermen explained that it usually occurs on cold days due to the contrast in temperatures between the air and the water, which generates condensation. In addition, they indicated that this phenomenon does not represent a risk for navigation in nearby areas, but is a reminder of the impact of climatological changes in the region.
As the afternoon progressed, the fog began to dissipate and visitors were able to observe the port’s characteristic sunset.
