The Animal Protection Unit of the Mérida City Council rescued an injured bird this Sunday, in response to the report of a Municipal Police agent assigned to the Biciruta.
The specimen, a female gray hawk, was seized on 31st Street along Paseo de Montejo and sent to the El Centenario Zoological Park for attention, where the MVZ Antonio Ávila Ruiz received it.
This species is characterized by its lead gray plumage on the back, tail with dark gray and black bars at the tip, and light gray breast with perpendicular stripes from the throat to the belly.
It lives in low and medium-sized forests, as well as in coastal areas, in the south-southeast of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula, and feeds on small mammals such as rodents, and reptiles.
The Animal Protection Unit, which was recently presented by Municipal President Cecilia Patrón Laviada, aims to promote a culture of care and respect for animals and monitor compliance with current regulations to eradicate animal abuse in the city of Mérida.
