A fire alert in La Isla shopping mall in the north of Mérida, the capital of Yucatán, caused the partial evacuation of that shopping center on the afternoon of Saturday, January 11.

The fire broke out in a Brazilian restaurant, although almost an hour later the state police declared that it was not a fire.

At 3:15 in the afternoon, people who were shopping or taking a walk in the eastern part of La Isla had to leave the building, when the evacuation order was given as part of the protocol for responding to a fire emergency.

A witness reported that a fire occurred at the Brazilia restaurant that was quickly controlled.

Likewise, the source reported that the fire outbreak was allegedly due to a short circuit and that several units of firefighters from the Ministry of Public Security (SSP) of Yucatán arrived at the commercial complex.

In addition to evacuating the restaurant area, those in charge of responding to emergencies in the shopping plaza closed it to people, so that no unauthorized person could approach it.

Although the column of smoke coming out of La Isla was observed from afar, at 4:02 in the afternoon the state police reported that a fire did not occur. The incident was smoke accumulated in the extractor system of a restaurant inside the mall.

Likewise, he said that firefighters dissipated the smoke accumulated in the pipeline and that the event did not represent any danger to visitors or nearby businesses.

This is not the first time that a fire has occurred in La Isla. In November 2018, a failure in a fryer activated the fire alarms and led to the evacuation of people who were in the Liverpool department store. On that occasion, the incident also resulted in a fire outbreak and also caused police and firefighters to arrive at the shopping center.
