With great enthusiasm and pride, Merida residents and visitors, led by Municipal President Cecilia Patrón Laviada, sang to Merida in the traditional Alborada, marking the beginning of the celebrations of the 483rd anniversary of the founding of the city.
Proudly wearing the regional costume of Yucatan, Cecilia Patrón led the traditional street procession that started from Santa Lucia Park to the Municipal Palace.
During the tour, she was accompanied by her daughter María Sofía, as well as numerous Merida families and visitors who enjoyed a magical night enlivened by dozens of troubadours from the Pastor Cervera, Pepe Domínguez, Armando Manzanero, and Guty Cárdenas associations, who delighted the night tour with their voices.
Upon arrival at the lower level of the Municipal Palace, the serenade began with songs such as “Peregrina”, “Acuarela”, “Mérida”, “Mi Mérida”, “Mérida colonial”, “Solo tú”, “Flor con alma” and “En tus ojos”.
The most special moment occurred at midnight, when Merida residents and visitors joined their voices to sing the mañanitas to the city while the sky lit up with colored lights from a fireworks show that officially announced the 483rd birthday of the very noble and loyal city of Mérida.
Cecilia Patrón Laviada highlighted the importance of unity and citizen participation in culture and art and assured that this event is an example of how the city can unite to celebrate its rich history and heritage.
“Today we are here to celebrate the pride of being Merida residents. Celebrating the 483rd anniversary means recognizing and evoking what we have built: the best city to live in, supportive, inclusive, and safe. Mérida is its people, who give it life, move it, and day by day write its history, that of a single Mérida that grows with deep love, effort, and dedication,” said the Mayor.
The mayor said that 483 years of history are testimony to a city that grows and advances towards a promising future; that each one of the thousands of days that narrate its past translates into a better city that is born from the people, from its traditions, and from a tireless spirit that makes it the Mérida that we love. “Today we can proudly say that Mérida is its participative people, and here, the people rule. These 483 years are only the beginning of a present where people are the center and engine that guides change.”
This important event sets the tone for a series of cultural and artistic events that will take place from January 5 to 26, within the framework of “Mérida Fest 2025, We Celebrate with You”, which will feature the participation of 862 artists of local, national and international stature and the intervention of nine invited countries such as Brazil, Iran, Japan, the Netherlands, Ecuador, Chile, Cuba, Argentina, and Costa Rica.
