A health specialist warned that Metapneumovirus is present in Yucatan, so he gave measures to avoid contagion.
“Having suffered from COVID-19 increases the chances of becoming infected with metapneumovirus (HMPV) because it decreases the defenses of the respiratory tract,” said David Canché Durán, a specialist in Public Health and Pediatrics.
In Mexico, practically 90% of people contracted COVID-19, and metapneumovirus is the cause of up to 15 percent of respiratory diseases in this winter season in Yucatan.
The recommendations to avoid the spread of this virus are the same as those applied during the pandemic: wash your hands frequently and wear a face mask. If you have symptoms, you should stay isolated, but cough, body aches, headaches, earaches, extreme fatigue, and increased lymph node growth, it is advisable to go to a doctor immediately.
“This virus is very new, we do not have defenses yet, because people generate immunity as infections arise,” explained the specialist. There are still no methods to detect this virus, the only option is to rule it out.
The people most likely to acquire this virus are children under five years old, specifically, those who are less than one year old, since they could suffer from bronchiolitis and they need nebulizations. Also, people who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), because this condition makes breathing difficult.
Likewise, the specialist said that it is likely that the number of infections will increase in this cold season, due to the decrease in defenses in the respiratory tract and because people tend to have more coexistence than in other months.
