The representative of the Citizen Comptroller’s Office for Water Protection in Yucatán, Cuauhtémoc Jacobo Femat, pointed out that given the announcement of the arrival of larger companies dedicated to nearshoring to Mexico, the legal framework of the federal environmental protection law must be modified. Environment since it “does not have teeth.”

In an interview, he recalled that the water and environmental crisis is national, due to the existing management model, which he described as extractivist and wasteful.

“We are going to present proposals to change this management model and become one of respect for the natural cycles of water, respect for ecosystems, and, above all, for the human rights of Indigenous people and society in general.”, added pointing out that they will present proposals to the National Development Plan 2024-2030.

He pointed out that in Yucatán, in addition to going for the state water law, they will first seek to change and modify the legal framework at the national level, since he assured that the scaffolding that was built since the administration of Carlos Salinas de Gortari and legislation which is still in force is which has allowed the hoarding of water and the destruction of the environment in the country.

“We are going to modify the legal framework, the human right to water already exists, so we are going for the secondary law and the general water law; We are not going to reform, we are not going to patch, we are going to change that norm. The federal environmental protection law has no teeth, so how is it going to protect ecosystems, and mangroves, among others?

The Autonomous Citizen Comptroller of Water in Yucatán is a group that has been formed to defend the state’s water. This group has presented proposals to secure water from industrial hoarding and dispossession.

They have pointed out that some of the problems facing water in Yucatan are: Contamination by pesticides, Ingress of salt water into freshwater sources, Contamination of the aquifer, and Hoarding of water by private companies.
