Today, Tuesday, January 7, the Guzmán López brothers will appear together in a court in Chicago, to decide whether to continue the judicial process against them.
Chicago is already waiting for Los Chapitos. This January 7, the brothers Joaquín and Ovidio Guzmán López, leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, will appear at 11:00 a.m. before the Court of the Northern District of Illinois.
The hearing scheduled for this Tuesday, January 7th, is the first that the sons of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán have together.
On October 21, the lawyer for El Ratón (Ovidio Guzman), and El Güero Moreno (Joaquín Guzman) confirmed that his clients are exploring the possibility of a plea agreement with the United States justice system.
Joaquín Guzmán voluntarily surrendered on July 25, 2024, near the border city of El Paso, Texas.
The son of El Chapo got off a small plane accompanied by Ismael El Mayo Zambada, founder of the Sinaloa Cartel, whom he allegedly kidnapped and took against his will to the United States.
The lawyer for the Zambada family said that the delivery of the capo was a pact between Los Chapitos, accused of fentanyl trafficking, to obtain a minimum sentence.
Los Chapitos’ lawyer confirms negotiation with the US
During the dispute for control of the Sinaloa Cartel, on October 21, Ovidio ‘El Ratón’ Guzmán López faced a hearing in the Federal Court of Chicago, in the United States.
After the end of this, Jeffrey Lichtman, lawyer for Ovidio Guzmán and Joaquín Guzmán López, confirmed that the sons of ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, who is imprisoned in a maximum security prison, are negotiating with the United States authorities to plead guilty and thus obtain a minimum sentence.
“The lawyer has already referred to a plea agreement that is in process (…) Although the cases of Joaquin and Ovidio are different, he is seeking the same agreement,” explained journalist Ariel Moutsatsos from Chicago.
What are Los Chapitos accused of in the US?
The Guzman brothers are responsible for the operation of approximately 11 methamphetamine laboratories in Sinaloa that, according to the State Department, produce between 136 and 226 kilograms of the drug per month.
“Methamphetamine is sold wholesale to other members of the Sinaloa Cartel and American and Canadian distributors,” the department indicated.
