The upper part of the Cathedral of Merida will receive maintenance to remove vegetation from the bell tower.
The exterior of the Cathedral, specifically the upper part, will undergo maintenance works, before the celebrations of the Virgin of Candelaria, reported Francisco González Torres, head of religious affairs of the City Council of Merida.
This is at the request of the Archdiocese of Yucatan, which wants the Church of San Ildefonso to look in all its splendor for the procession and other activities on February 2.
The intervention will consist of removing bushes that grew in the bell tower of the church, a place that can only be accessed from outside.
Therefore, he highlighted the joint work of three levels of Government to start the project: the State Government, through the Institute for the Construction and Conservation of Public Works in Yucatan (Inccopy), will provide the necessary crane; The Federation, through the National Institute of Architecture and History (INAH) will grant the corresponding permits.
González Torres said that the work will be carried out starting on Monday, January 27, hoping to cause the least possible damage to the area. “With the number of events that take place on the weekend (the Ball Game exhibition, Mérida on Sunday), it was preferred to wait until Monday to begin with the maintenance labor,” he said.
In this regard, it was confirmed that masses and religious activities will not be suspended, although those attending the venue will have to enter through the side door on 61st Street.
It is also not planned to close 60th Street on the Plaza Grande, and the Pasaje de la Revolución will be blocked, as has been a constant with the remodeling of the Museo Ateneo Peninsular building.
In addition to the removal of visible bushes in the bell towers, the corner tree will be partially pruned. He clarified that the pruning does not mean that the tree will be removed, but that some branches that already cause a problem by hitting the side of the building, on 61st Street, will be cut.
Last Sunday, January 19th, the festivities in honor of the Virgin of Candelaria began, with the lowering of her image and subsequent procession from Santa Lucía. On February 2, the religious festival will begin with the mañanitas, followed by a new procession and the holding of five masses.
