Agents from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) in Yucatán arrested a man yesterday morning for allegedly stealing gasoline from parked vehicles in Mérida. According to Eduardo Daniel Quintal Garcia, the suspect, identified as Luis Alberto C., was reportedly extracting diesel from trucks parked between the Villa Magna subdivision and the Periférico Ring Road.
The incident came to light when the complainant noticed a car parked next to a truck with license plate 992AS3, which he oversees. Stopping to help, the suspect claimed his car engine had overheated and he was waiting for a mechanic. Unbeknownst to the complainant, the suspect had already siphoned fuel from the truck, owned by the moving company JAQ.
Later, after making some purchases and returning to his office, the complainant passed by the area again and observed a container full of diesel in the car with a license plate ZCB 925E. Realizing the theft, he called the SSP through 911, spotting the suspect with a hose.
Upon arrival, SSP agents discovered that the truck and other parked vehicles had been targeted for fuel theft. Patrol 5000 officers arrested Luis Alberto C., suspected of being a “Huachicolero” (fuel thief). The complainant was informed that he had up to 36 hours to file a formal complaint. The car containing the stolen fuel was impounded.
