Several Yucatecans living in Los Angeles, California, were able to escape the fires that ravaged this sector of the United States.

The president of Poder Migrante Mexicano Yucatán, Miguel Martínez Contreras, confirmed that a part of the countrymen who live in this demarcation reported that they had to be relocated, as they were close to the sites that were threatened by the conflagrations.

“The situation has affected them a lot, both in terms of work and in terms of the risk to their homes. Some are still very close to the fires. According to what we heard, some were two or three kilometers away from the critical zone. Some have already been evacuated to temporary shelters,” he explained.

He acknowledged that there is also the risk that several Yucatecan migrants will lose their jobs, especially those who are in the United States illegally.

It was reported that about 60% of the countrymen from Yucatan are in California, many of them in regular condition with families.

In turn, Corina Gonzalez, a member of this group, acknowledged that the lack of an official registry of those who are living in this state affected by the fires has made it difficult for organizations to support them in facing this problem.

“We know that there are people affected by the same thing, but we do not have an exact number because we do not have an exact figure. We have communicated with some, we would like to have contact or more than anything, meet with the entire population that is suffering from these problems,” she said.

An effort was made by the authorities to establish a strategy to know the real number of migrants who live in the U.S. and who are susceptible to support of any kind during their stay in this country.
