Mérida is in 11th place in the country where its citizens feel safest, only 30 out of every 100 inhabitants felt unsafe in the city, according to the results of the National Urban Public Safety Survey (Ensu) of Inegi, corresponding to the third quarter of 2024.
This is well below the national average, which reports that 61.7% of the population aged 18 and over, residing in 91 urban areas of the country, considered it unsafe to live in their city.
The urban areas with the lowest percentage of people who considered living in their city unsafe were San Pedro Garza, Piedras Negras, Benito Juárez, Los Mochis, and Los Cabos.
In contrast, the cities with the highest percentage of people who considered that living in their city was unsafe were: Villahermosa, with 95.3; Uruapan, with 92.5; Fresnillo, with 90.9; Culiacán Rosales, with 90.6; Tuxtla Gutiérrez, with 90.6, and Tapachula, with 90.1.
Regarding the perception of insecurity in specific physical spaces, the survey indicates that 68.9% of the population felt unsafe at ATMs on public roads; 63.0%, in public transportation; 55.0%, on the road, and 53.6%, on the bank.
Because of this feeling of insecurity, 61% of the population stopped allowing their children to go out, 45% stopped going out at night and wearing jewelry, 43% stopped carrying cash, and 32% no longer addressed taxis.
Meanwhile, according to data provided by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, Mérida occupies the first position with the lowest crime incidences during December 2024, which reaffirms the position of the State capital as one of the safest cities in the country.
In this report issued by the federal agency, the Yucatecan capital ranked first with the lowest incidence of crime, with a rate of 186.6 crimes per 100 thousand inhabitants.
It also occupies the first position with the lowest incidence in the case of intentional homicides, reporting a rate of 1.3 crimes per 100 thousand inhabitants.
Regarding femicides, Mérida had a rate of 0.72 crimes per 100 thousand women, a figure that places it in 11th place.
