The state-owned airline Mexicana, revived by former President Lopez Obrador now under military administration, announced the cancellation of eight of the 18 destinations it served, representing practically 50% of its coverage in Mexico.
The affected flights were operated by TAR, a private company contracted to provide aircraft and crew. The routes eliminated are: Acapulco, Campeche, Guadalajara, Nuevo Laredo, Puerto Vallarta, Uruapan, and Villahermosa.
Mexicana did not detail the reasons behind this decision but invited passengers to consult the cancellation rules.
Since its relaunch under government control in 2023, Mexicana has depended on TAR to cover half of its routes, due to the lack of its aircraft on the market. Currently, the airline is awaiting the delivery of 20 new aircraft manufactured by Embraer.
In its first year of operations, the airline, which operates with public funds, accumulated losses of more than 900 million pesos and registered an average of 53 passengers per flight.
Mexicana, which uses the Felipe Ángeles International Airport as one of its main operating points, celebrated its first anniversary on December 26.
