Toys, shoes and clothes, shelves, wooden boxes, Christmas trees, washing machines, rusty irons, refrigerators, and even a broken fiberglass swimming pool were part of almost 20 tons of trash that “Carlos” accumulated for years in his home.
“No! Don’t take that, that’s no use to me, that’s not either, I can use that too,” said Carlos to the workers of Public Services of the City of Mérida who arrived this morning to take away all the trash that practically covered the home of this man, located on 33rd Street between 46th and 50th in the Pacabtún neighborhood.
Municipal police were needed to allow the work to be carried out, because although he was cooperative with the authorities, Carlos, at times, showed some suspicion towards his “belongings” and tried to get close to prevent the waste from being loaded onto a truck.

Support from Municipal Civil Protection
Enrique Alcocer Basto, director of Municipal Civil Protection, indicated that this support was carried out jointly to support the man and the neighbors, who, given the situation, were already feeling the damage caused mainly by the harmful fauna.
The official indicated that Carlos himself understood that he was in a predicament because he could barely enter his home, which was under dozens of tons of garbage, and that he could not move everything that he had accumulated for years and that he considered useful. “This turns out to be a support for himself, for his safety, and for his health,” commented the municipal official.
Alcocer Bastos indicated that the authorities would offer this man psychological help.
