One year after the Tren Maya began operating, it has not fulfilled its purpose of attracting more tourism to the region, which is why it is necessary to rethink the project with new promotional strategies to increase the flow of visitors to the city, said Noé Rodríguez Cervera. , hotel businessman and former president of the Hotel and Hostel Association.

He recalled that when the Mérida-Cancún route was put into operation, many people boarded it for several days simply to live a new experience.

As time went by, the euphoria subsided and locals hardly used it, as they continued boarding buses and taxis.

The interviewee stressed that now the residents of Valladolid do not say “I’m going to Cancun or Mérida on the Mayan Train”, because they returned to traditional transportation, a situation that is notorious in the terminals.

A year ago, the tourist flow increased in December, as visitors from Campeche and Mérida arrived on the Tren Maya, but time erased that supposed increase.

He explained the need to rethink promotion strategies since in this way the arrival of tourists could be increased.

Rodríguez Cervera said that it is clear that the connectivity points in this region with other entities in the southeast have improved, although they are not promoted and are precisely those covered by the Mayan Train.

A taxi driver interviewed indicated that the train did not affect other taxi drivers, who continue to work normally, even though demand drops according to certain seasons.

For example, once the Quintana Roo students return, the service will be normalized.

For her part, a neighbor explained that a few days ago she traveled to Cancun on the Mayan Train as an experience. However, he stressed that he would not board it again because the ticket was expensive.

From Valladolid to Cancun or Mérida, the price is almost $500, in addition to another $150 that you pay for a taxi to get to the center, a cost that is high and that not many can afford. According to data collected at the station, it was found that the staff has noticed that their use has decreased. The majority who board the railway come from other destinations.
