Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause symptoms similar to those of a common cold, such as fever, cough, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.
In Mexico, cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been confirmed in several states:
- Nuevo Leon: Two confirmed cases; the patients presented mild symptoms and did not require hospitalization.
- Sinaloa: 153 confirmed cases.
- Veracruz: One confirmed case.
- Tamaulipas: One suspected case under investigation.
- Yucatan: Possible cases reported on social media, still without official confirmation.
In more severe cases, especially in young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems, it can cause bronchitis, pneumonia, or worsening asthma.
Health authorities recommend the following preventive measures to reduce the risk of HMPV infection:
- Hand Hygiene: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
- Respiratory Etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Social Distancing: Maintain a distance of at least one meter from sick people.
- Ventilation: Ventilate closed spaces.
- Vaccination: Get vaccinated against influenza to reduce the risk of co-infections.
It is important to note that, although HMPV does not represent a serious threat to most people, it is essential to follow the recommendations of health authorities to prevent infection.
