Sea turtle nesting sites are protected in Yucatan

In the Yucatan Peninsula, it is estimated that around 150 thousand sea turtles are born annually; their nesting season is from May to September. However, there have been out-of-season outbreaks in the state.

Biologist Toshio Yokoyama, former director of Management and Conservation of Natural Resources at the Secretariat of Sustainable Development, said that turtle nesting out of season is not unknown.

The marine conservation specialist commented that these atypical nestings are related to the climatic characteristics of the region, where stable temperatures and abrupt changes caused by cold fronts can influence the behavior of the turtles.

Yokoyama explained that it is common for some turtles to return at the end of the season to spawn, especially in places like El Cuyo, where activity has been observed until the end of November. This behavior can lead to untimely incubations that coincide with the climatic and ecological conditions of the region.

He stressed that among the beaches in Yucatan where active work is being done to protect turtles are Celestún, Sisal, Progreso, Telchac, Santa Clara, Dzilam Bravo, Río Lagartos, Las Coloradas and El Cuyo.
