Police authorities revealed that a young man who used to dance in the streets to collect money from motorists in Cancun’s Region 259, was gunned down because he refused to pay a “protection fee” to an organized crime group.

The man who was shot on Monday, January 27th, while buying tacos at a street vendor in the Villas Otoch Paraiso subdivision, and finally, lost his life during the early hours of Thursday, January 30th. Police sources revealed that the attack was directed at him, for issues related to “Derecho de Piso” (protection fee).

The victim was identified as Fernando N., known among locals as “Pixců,” who danced at the area’s street markets for a few coins and to help himself financially; he also watched cars and motorcycles in the parking lot of a supermarket.

Data obtained during the first investigations detailed that “Pixců” was allegedly being extorted, as he was being asked for “protection fees” for dancing at the markets and watching vehicles in the store parking lot, a situation that kept him worried, as he was threatened with death.

According to residents of Supermanzana 259, Fernando had said that subjects were bothering him to pay a fee, although the amount demanded is unknown; with this information, it was established that the attack was directed at him for that reason.

The attack occurred on Monday evening, when he crossed the street from the parking lot where he earned his living, to a taco stand, at the intersection of Bugambilia Avenue and Leona Vicario Street. He ordered something to eat and while he was waiting for his order, two subjects arrived in a minivan, apparently a gray Chrysler Voyager.

The driver stood in front of him while the co-pilot pulled the firearm out of the window and fired three times into the victim’s back, who fell to the ground. Later, municipal police cordoned off the area while paramedics from the Citizen Security Secretariat gave him first aid.

During the early hours of Thursday, personnel from the general hospital requested the intervention of the ministerial police and forensic experts from the State Attorney General’s Office, since Fernando lost his life as a result of the attack, while his relatives were also notified.

The aggressors’ vehicle was found on Leona Vicario Avenue, a few meters from where the events occurred; it was abandoned with the doors open and the lights on. Authorities secured the unit to make it available to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

No arrests have been made in connection to this homicide.
