The National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra) in Mérida is betting that in the case of the future president of the United States threat to impose tariffs on Mexico, “their heads will cool down and they will find other solutions. Because what they are looking for is the security that everyone wants”, said its president Alejandro Gómory Martínez.

After being re-elected as head of this chamber last Thursday, January 16th, at a press conference he also shared the vision and challenges facing the industrial sector in the first months of 2025, highlighting that the organization’s plans on a long-term agenda and the deadline that guides strategic projects.

He also anticipated that by operating the two plants of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) that are being built in the entity (Mérida and Valladolid) it will be possible to reduce rates for energy consumption, both for the industrial sector and for domestic service considerably. However, that would be six months or a year after they are already in operation.

In the case of Donald Trump’s threat to apply tariffs to Mexico when he assumes the presidency in the United States, a ceremony that will take place tomorrow, Monday, the leader said “There is a detail that is not much on the radar or there is little visibility, because A good part of the trade between the United States and Mexico begins with the piece in a country, crosses the border, is modified, returns, undergoes another transformation and returns, that is, it has several crossings before reaching the final product.

“That means that, if tariffs are imposed at each stage, they will add cost, and it is a measure that does affect Mexicans, but also Americans,” he said.

“I think that heads are going to cool down and they are going to find solutions to what they want to achieve, which are not tariffs, but the security that everyone wants, and for us to be calm,” he said.
