Fans of the Liverpool Quartet attended on Friday, January 24, at the Mayab House of Culture, the first day of the V Great Beatles Festival, an event designed for their followers in Mérida to share their love for the group founded in 1956.

The program started at 4 p.m. with the inauguration of the exhibition “Across the Universe”, which is dedicated to John Lennon.

Each edition of the festival pays tribute to a member of the band. Last year the exhibition focused on Paul McCartney and, as announced, the next one will be dedicated to George Harrison.

The exhibition includes unique objects of historical value, such as an original signature of John Lennon and Brian Epstein, the “fifth Beatle”, as well as two sculptures of Lennon that represent him in two stages of his life: one in his beginnings with the Liverpool Quartet and another in her solo role.

Roger Ávila, coordinator of the exhibition, described the iconic singer as “an enterprising, creative man committed to his causes” and invited fans and the general public to visit the exhibition — which was open until Saturday — to learn more about his legacy.

After the inauguration, a discussion was held in which special guests participated: Ricardo Calderón and Raymundo Gabriel, from the radio program “Forever Beatles”, as well as Yanina and Rachel Azcorra Molina, from the Yucatecan program “El Club de los Escarabajos” (escarabajo is Spanish for beetle). The panelists shared how their passion for the band emerged and influenced their lives.

The guests also reflected on how The Beatles’ music has transcended generations and remains current thanks to the support of the media, which has contributed to consolidating the group’s image as an icon of popular culture.

“Many years ago, David began attending the festival he organized in Mexico City, known as The Great Beatles Festival. This year we celebrated 30 years of organizing it,” he said.

“David, as a great fan and passionate musician of The Beatles, had the dream of doing something similar here, in Mérida. He asked me for support for its organization and authorization to use the name of our festival, something to which I gladly agreed,” he continued.

“This is a replica of the Mexico City festival, but it is not the only place where I have collaborated. I have also supported festivals in Veracruz, Monterrey, Querétaro, Puebla, Morelia, and Tampico,” Calderón shared.
