The church of Our Lady of the Assumption turned 266 years old on January 1, and the date coincides with the traditional festival in honor of the Virgin of the Star, the patron saint of this city.
Peto is located in the south of Yucatan and has one of the most majestic churches.
January 1 was the anniversary of the church and the culminating day of the celebrations in honor of the Virgin of the Star, which is the center of devotion for thousands of Catholics.
Religious activities began in recent days and the Virgin of the Star visited the pastoral centers.
A mass was held and later a procession was held to the Pilgrim Virgin, a replica of the Virgin of the Star, which does not leave the church due to its age, as they do not want it to deteriorate.
The Virgin of the Star is one of the three sister images that were brought many years ago from Guatemala and is a companion of the Virgin of Izamal.
The patron saint of Peto is the center of devotion for thousands of Catholics and the night before last, after mass, a procession was held in which the guilds participated, which were present during the religious festivities in recent days.
The Virgin is taken to visit the San José chapel, where another mass will be officiated. Later, the effigy will be taken back to the church.
The activities in honor of the patron saint originated on January 1, 1799.
“In its beginnings, the traditional festival was only religious; the Virgin of the Star was brought from Guatemala because at that time the Franciscan friars taught the indigenous people how to carve images,” explained the chronicler Arturo Rodríguez Sabido a few years ago.
