The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) announced that it will file a criminal complaint against a man identified as Arturo N., allegedly responsible for killing a jaguar in the El Aquichal community, located 25 kilometers from the municipal seat of Ciudad Valles. , San Luis Potosí.

According to a press release, the jaguar, a species listed as endangered, was allegedly shot down after roaming the land of the person involved.

Profepa highlighted that this fact constitutes a crime provided for in Article 420 section V of the Federal Penal Code, which establishes penalties of one to nine years in prison and fines of 300 to three thousand days of salary for causing damage to protected species.

The agency also reported that an administrative procedure will be initiated for violation of the General Wildlife Law, within the framework of Article 122, section I, which sanctions acts that harm wildlife.

The environmental organization Selva Teenek, through its Wildlife Conservation Management Unit (UMA) in San Luis Potosí, was the first to receive information about the death of the feline.

Ena Buenfil Zamudio, director of Selva Teenek, explained that the animal was killed while roaming a pasture. “We don’t know if there was any damage to his cows because he doesn’t mention it; they were just hanging around,” he commented.

Buenfil added that this situation is related to poaching, which forces animals like the jaguar to approach inhabited areas in search of food. After learning of the facts, Selva Teenek filed a complaint with the Ciudad Valles delegation of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), although an immediate acknowledgment was not obtained due to the absence of the person in charge of the office.
