A tragic incident shook the community of the Parish of San Luis Obispo, in Calkini, Campeche, Mexico; when, at 3 pm on December 30, 2024, the thunderous noise of the roof collapsing was heard all across town.

Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but the event caused alarm among the parishioners who were there at the time.

According to testimonies from those attending, the collapse of the structure was sudden and instantaneous, and fortunately, there were no people under the roof at the time of the accident. Concern among the parishioners has grown upon learning that the conditions of the roof were already known to local authorities, who, according to the faithful, had been previously informed about the deterioration of the structure, but did not do anything.

Parishioners said that over the past few months, there had been reports of obvious signs of deterioration in the roof, a situation that put both churchgoers and employees in charge of maintaining the building at risk.

The incident has prompted an urgent call to the authorities to carry out the necessary inspections in other historic buildings and places of congregation, to avoid future disasters. The community has demanded that measures be taken to repair the roof and ensure the safety of those who attend the parish.
