The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) presented preliminary figures on deaths recorded in Mexico during the period from January to June 2024. In Yucatan, heart disease tops the list of the main causes of death.

According to the Registered Death Statistics (EDR), published by INEGI on Wednesday, January 22, chronic non-communicable diseases are responsible for the majority of deaths in the state.

From January to June 2024, 2,187 deaths were recorded due to heart disease, representing 54.55 percent in men and 45.45 percent in women.

Diabetes mellitus ranks second on the list, with 966 deaths, of which 55.9 percent correspond to women and 44.1 percent to men.

Malignant tumors are the third cause of death among Yucatecans, with 819 cases. Of these, 51.89 percent were women and 48.11 percent were men. This data shows the importance of strengthening prevention and early detection campaigns for cancer in the region.

In fourth place are liver diseases responsible for 542 deaths. In this category, 67.9 percent of the victims were men, while 32.1 percent were women, a fact that highlights the need to address associated risk factors such as alcohol consumption and hepatitis.

Finally, cerebrovascular diseases, such as high blood pressure, conclude the list of the five main causes of death in the state, with 525 deaths. Of the total, 52 percent correspond to men and 48 percent to women.
