Damage to other people’s property, threats, and theft make up the triad that topped the list of the 10 crimes with the highest incidence in Yucatán during 2024, according to information from federal public security agencies.
The list also includes crimes such as drug dealing and family violence, which registered an increase compared to the previous year.
The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System presented its most recent monthly report in December, which covers until November.
In it, he points out that the top ten of crimes is led by damage to other people’s property.
According to the report, authorities received 639 reports of this crime in the state, with February, April, May, and July being the months with the highest number of complaints, with more than 50 complaints per month on average.
Another crime that became relevant in the recently concluded year was threats, with 589 complaints and a monthly average of 53 complaints.
In third place is robbery, an old burden of Yucatán, which also had a considerable impact according to federal records, with 462 cases, divided into robberies with and without violence.
The types of robberies in Yucatán in 2024 include residential robbery, with 70 reports, of which one was violent.
In addition, 104 cases of theft of motor vehicles were recorded, mainly affecting motorcyclists with 63 reports of theft of these light vehicles and 41 of cars. All of these robberies were committed without violence.
More than half of the robberies against pedestrians on public roads involved violence, with 20 of the 38 cases being violent robberies and 18 being non-violent. A theft on individual public transportation was also reported.
However, there was an increase in the number of business robberies. Until November 2024, 94 businesses in Yucatán were victims of crime, exceeding the 93 registered in 2023.
Although the difference is only one case, it must be considered that the December reports are missing. There was also the theft of machinery and other artifacts such as cables, tubes, and other tools.
The robbery category concludes with a section that describes “other robberies,” which totaled 154 cases.
The list continues with an offense that gained strength in the recently concluded year: drug dealing, which until November 2024 totaled 432 cases, occupying fifth place, one step less than in 2023.
Thus, Yucatán recorded its highest figure in terms of the occurrence of this crime in the last five years. Statistics indicate that in 2020, 165 complaints were reported for this crime.
The problem worsened in 2021, when cases increased to 223, while in 2022 the number of complaints grew to 281. In 2023 that number increased by 110 cases, going from 281 in 2022 to 391 that year.
The crime of family violence was in the middle of the list, with 284 complaints documented by federal authorities until November.
This figure reflects a 47% increase in cases of family violence compared to 2023 when 193 cases were recorded. This percentage could increase once the December data is updated.
In sixth place are injuries, a crime that consists of causing damage to the bodily integrity, and physical or mental health of another person. The occurrence of intentional acts is five times greater than that of negligent injuries, according to the federal safety report.
Seventh place is occupied by homicides committed in Yucatán, which also increased in 2024 compared to 2023, with 178 cases until November, compared to 165 in 2023. This criminal category is headed by negligent acts, of which all deaths, 137 cases, occurred in traffic accidents.
On the list of the 10 crimes with the highest incidence in Yucatán during 2024 are failure to comply with family assistance obligations or child support, with 110 cases reported; sexual abuse, in ninth place, with 104 cases accumulated until the most recent federal report, one more case than in 2023. The ten closes with 75 reported cases of fraud.
Other crimes that drew attention were seven cases of femicide, one of abortion, two cases of corruption of minors, 38 cases of dispossession, 52 crimes committed by public servants, 43 acts of simple rape, 11 electoral crimes, and 334 complaints for “other crimes of common jurisdiction”, as classified by the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System.
